Fishing Report for 23rd January 2012

Hello Everyone

The last couple of months have seen average fishing with the same crappy weather that we have all endured for months.

The water quality is what I am blaming for the poor showing of fish along Pittwater and our coast.

The fish are there and there is plenty of baitfish around but getting them to bite is a little tricky to say the least. I believe the fishing is similar to that of winter fishing only the water is warm.

The visibility is also a factor and with the cloudy green water I am sure this has also slowed the bite.

We do have salmon in small numbers in Pittwater as well as the odd patch of bonito, rat kingfish as well as tailor. The smaller kingfish seem to be feeding on small whitebait but are reacting to small soft plastics.

The areas to catch kingfish have changed from day to day but a great place to start is Longnose Point. Usually travelling this stretch of water will see some sort of pelagic action.

Squid seem to be a bit easier than they have been over the last few weeks. The best colour to tempt them at the moment seems to be orange with pink coming a close second.

The areas to try are The Basin, Barrenjoey Head, West Head (whilst collecting yellowtail), Portuguese Beach and Towlers Bay.

Remember only take a few because 1 squid can be cut into strips if the fish are biting hard and this can leave some squid for your next fishing trip.

The kingfish along our coast are on one day but frightfully absent the next. The water quality once again seems to be the main issue as once again the baitfish are there and the water is warm.

The areas that we have found kingfish are Whale Headland, Newport Reef, Bungan Head and Long Reef. On most days the smaller fish aren’t hard to find but the bigger kingfish are a little harder to come by.

I have found that the smaller kingfish are working the surface and down a bit deeper there are some decent models to play with. The better bait doesn’t exist at the moment but if you can find some slimy mackeral a better fish will usually find it hard to resist.

The Hawkesbury River is still fishing pretty well. We are seeing captures of smaller jewfish, some nice flathead, bream, whiting and even picking up the odd blue-swimmer crab.

The fishing has been best around the changes of the tide and areas such as The Railway Bridge, Sanatorium Rock, Gunya Point, and Juno Point are seeing a lot of fish being caught.

The other area that is seeing some big flathead and nice sized jewfish being landed is from Bar Point through to Spencer. This stretch of water is dotted with deepwater holes and drifting along with live yellowtail bumping on the bottom is a great way to track down some of the bigger fish. Whilst drifting and waiting for a hit, try casting around soft plastics for jewfish and flathead, you may surprise yourself at how easy they can be caught on soft plastics.

When fishing the Hawkesbury it is worth remembering that fresh and live bait will catch a lot more fish than frozen bait.

Broken Bay is seeing some decent fish being caught but most are flathead and the odd larger jewfish.

Flint & Steel is seeing tailor, bream, flathead and jewfish being caught but it has been important to fish the edge or scattered reef ground to give yourself the best chance.

Juno Point is seeing some big jewfish being hooked with live or butter flied yellowtail and the same bait has been responsible for the downfall of a few big flathead.

Lion Island reef is working well with a variety of fish showing up. Tailor, bream, tarwhine, flathead and jewfish have all shown up at different times. This area is best fished on the run out tide and again near the edge of the reef burlying back towards the reef, not over it.

The sand out the front of Ettalong Beach and Umina Beach is working well for flathead once again on the drift and pilchards are working fine.

I hope that this report sees you taking advantage of the next break in the weather and I hope to see you aboard with me soon.
